A long-standing food processing company supplying the UK catering industry relied on a bespoke operational system originally developed using a Microsoft Access front end and an on-premise SQL Server database. Over time, the business expanded its products, services and operational requirements, with the system evolving alongside it to support increasingly complex processes. However, as technology and user expectations advanced, the Access-based user interface was beginning to limit the organisation's ability to modernise and take advantage of newer technologies.
The business wanted a solution that would improve usability, increase flexibility and support future growth, while avoiding the disruption and risk associated with a complete system replacement. Maintaining continuity of operations was critical, as the system remained central to day-to-day business activities.
Vensis worked with the client to develop a phased modernisation strategy. Rather than replacing the entire application at once, the project focused initially on the areas that would deliver the greatest immediate benefit. The first phase involved replacing functionality used on Windows-based tablets with a modern browser-based application, providing a more intuitive and accessible user experience while retaining integration with existing business processes and data.
By moving to a web-based platform, the business gained greater flexibility over hardware choices and was able to transition away from higher-cost Windows tablets to more affordable Android devices and handheld PDAs. The browser-based architecture also created a platform for further expansion, allowing additional functionality to be migrated and enhanced over time.
